Family fun holidays, blue-flag beaches, theme parks & loads to do in the Skegness & Ingoldmells area... it's surprising what's happening here! » Rent Skegness Caravan Holidays
Network Rail began work on the second stage of its £21million investment to renew the old track between Boston and Skegness and improve Skegness station.
Chairman of Skegness, East Coast and Wolds Hospitality Association Nigel Tett said: “Previously holiday makers visiting by train have been treated like cattle, hopefully this will make for a more prompt and efficient service and will allow them to put more carriages on the line.
“First encounters count and when people come to Skegness the railway station is like the town’s shop window which at the moment is not a very attractive one.” … as reported by PeterboroughToday.co.uk
“Skegness has its roots in the 9th century during the Viking (Danish) invasions to the east coasts of England. They established a medieval harbour town, which has gradually grown into the tourist paradise we enjoy today. The name Skegness is derived from the Danish for nose and beard, as the Danes would says “skæg” and “næs” because, as some claim that Skegness geographically resembles those very features. Other similar tales refer to “Skeggi” meaning the bearded one!” … go to Squidoo to read more.
Well lots of people saw and enjoyed the partial solar eclipse this week at Gibralter Point, near Skegness. The pictures on the news and on various web sites look stunning… It was possible for the spectators to see the eclipse without the need for special camera filters but spectators did need to wear special solar protection glasses.
SPORTS clubs and organisations in the Skegness area are being invited to join Skegness Sports Forum. The Forum, which is organised by East Lindsey District Council, meets regularly throughout the year to support the development of sports activities within the community.
Forum Chairman, Nigel Roylance, from Skegness Table Tennis Club, explained: “We work closely with clubs to help them grow and develop so they can achieve their aspirations. “We want to encourage more people in our community to be fit and active and by working together we can create more opportunities for local people to take part in sports and ultimately improve their quality of life.”
The next meeting of Skegness Sports Forum will be taking place on Monday, January 17, 2011 at The Pavilion at Skegness Grammar School at 6.30pm.
That’s because organisers have barely changed a thing. “If it works, we leave it,” carnival committee secretary Julie Chapman says proudly.
“Nearly every event could be classed as on old favourite.
“I can tell you one thing – a lot of hard work goes into it no matter what we do.”
Running from this Sunday, August 8, until the afternoon of Saturday, August 14, the carnival will be thrust into the public domain with a parade bristling with colour and vigour.
Setting out Sunday at 2.30pm, the parade will travel from Heath Road, up to Wainfleet Road, through the centre of town along Lumley Road, then briefly down Drummond Road before trailing back along Grand Parade. While onlookers have no trouble appreciating the eye-catching floats when they’re in motion, it’s what happens in the hours leading up to the big parade which is most impressive.
“You don’t have weeks to put the floats together. Most of it happens the Saturday afternoon and evening before the parade,” explains Julie. “Those with floats depend largely on local businesses donating a driver and a truck to take them around.
“So that truck or vehicle might be in use until Saturday night and then you’ve got to work hurriedly to get it just right.”
Julie says her own passion for the parade comes from the days when her son was a member of the scouts and she used to help design their entry.
The fact that she is married to carnival chairman Brian Chapman may also have something to do with her enthusiasm.
Working on a voluntary basis, the 16 members of the carnival committee have shouldered a huge load since taking it off the hands of the council a dozen years ago.
They are currently appealing for anybody who can donate a few hours to help act as stewards for the Sunday parade. No qualifications other than a willingness to work as a team are needed.
“We are more like a family than a committee really,” says Julie.
“I wouldn’t still be involved if there wasn’t so much enjoyment in it.”

Mablethorpe, Skegness and Sutton on Sea will all be flying prestigious Blue Flags and Quality Coast Award Flags again this summer, as the beaches are once again ranked amongst the best in the UK.
Keep Britain Tidy, the Environmental Charity, only awards the Blue Flags to seaside resorts that can demonstrate they meet stringent standards in cleanliness and have sound environmental management.
Being given the privilege of flying the Blue Flags and Quality Coast Award Flags also demands that each resort has good facilities and information available to visitors.
Blue Flag awards: “This is another national endorsement that our coast is well looked after and we know we have lots to offer visitors again this year.” – Councillor Doreen Stephenson
East Lindsey District Council is delighted the three resorts it manages have again demonstrated that they achieve this standard. The Leader of the District Council, Councillor Doreen Stephenson, said this summer will be exciting on the East Lindsey coast: “This is another national endorsement that our coast is well looked after and we know we have lots to offer visitors again this year.
“As well as wonderful beaches, we have an exciting programme of festivals being planned, including the Festival of Bathing Beauties in Mablethorpe and the SO Festival 2010 in Skegness.”
The GREAT NEWS IS, is that Skegness, the East Coast’s premier resort town, is booming in 2010 !!
Holiday websites and online caravan sites for the Skegness area are reporting a massive increase in interest and visitor hits over last year. Why? Well we can speculate that the poor Euro rate, sporadic volcano eruptions, flights costs, election uncertainty and a general feeling of financial strive as meant Brits looking to the green and pleasant land for their summer holidays.
So I guess holidays in the UK this year may save some much needed money. Here in Lincolnshire, Skegness has been a popular choice for holidaymakers and this year does not look like being any different.
Yes, Skegness, Ingoldmells, Chapel St Leonards and Mablethorpe offer traditional Brit seaside type holidays, but we think there are many surprises to find and certainly there are plenty of activities to take part in these days. Perhaps you’d like to try climbing, canoeing, quad-biking, cycling, paintballing and of course the ever popular theme parks and rides. There are great attractions for people of all ages too… so you can have a laid back holiday or a full-on no-rest-for-the-wicked holiday… in a nutshell SKEGNESS OFFERS CHOICE !
